The Challenge
A Call To Action
College campuses have the potential to have a tremendous impact upon the environment and the society in which they exist. A sustainable campus can have a positive impact upon the environment by reducing resource consumption, energy use, and solid waste, and it can directly affect society by educating students and community members about environmental issues. A sustainable campus also possesses endless opportunity to have indirect impact upon the environment and society through the model it provides for others to follow and the legacy it leaves for future generations.
Unfortunately, our great College has much to do:
- - The College currently emits 62,560 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year
- - The College's energy bill is $6 million annually
- - The College produces about 3,110 tons of solid waste each year, only 23% of which is recycled
We hope that through the work of students, faculty, and alumni, these numbers will change drastically over the coming years. Our work is ongoing, but we cannot do this alone! We need the help and support of all members of the William and Mary community in order to accomplish this goal.
